Crawl space insulation: how it works

A cold, damp crawl space leads to cold feet and heat loss through the floor. By insulating the crawl space, you can tackle this. In this article, you can read how it works, when it's possible, and which approach is right for your home.

Why insulate the crawl space?

Many homes have a crawl space that is openly connected to the outside air and cold ground. This cold rises through the floor. Furthermore, moisture from the ground can evaporate and enter the home.

By insulating the crawl space, the floor stays warmer, draughts from below are reduced, and you'll need less heating.

  • Warmer floor and fewer cold feet
  • Less damp in the crawl space
  • Lower energy consumption
  • More comfort on the ground floor

Ground insulation or floor insulation?

There are two ways to address the crawl space. With underfloor insulation, insulation is applied to the underside of the floor. With floor insulation (also known as crawl space floor insulation), the crawl space floor itself is covered with an insulating layer.

Floor insulation (crawl space floor insulation) is particularly useful if the crawl space is low or if the underside of the floor is difficult to access. An insulating layer on the floor also helps to limit ground moisture.

How floor insulation with EPS-parels works

Greenisolatie uses EPS-parels for floor insulation. These are small, lightweight beads that are blown into the crawl space via a hose. A technician then distributes the beads evenly across the floor, creating a continuous insulating layer.

No structural work is needed inside the home: the crawl space is accessed via the existing crawl hatch.

Is my crawl space suitable?

Whether your crawl space is suitable depends, among other things, on its height, accessibility, and the degree of moisture. If there's water in the crawl space, that must first be resolved. The crawl space must also remain adequately ventilated.

Grant for insulating the crawl space

Floor insulation may, under certain conditions, be eligible for the national ISDE grant, and sometimes also for a municipal scheme. We check which grant applies to your home and handle the application for you.

Frequently asked questions

How long does crawl space insulation take?

For an average home, floor insulation with EPS-parels is usually completed within half a day.

Do I need to break open the floor?

No. The EPS-parels are applied into the crawl space via the existing crawl hatch.

Does floor insulation help against moisture?

An insulating layer on the floor helps to limit ground moisture. If there is water in the crawl space, that must first be resolved.
