What is crawl space ground insulation?
For crawl space ground insulation, we apply a layer of insulating material to the ground beneath your home. Greenisolatie uses EPS beads: lightweight beads of expanded polystyrene. The insulation therefore sits on the ground, not against the underside of your floor.
The layer of beads helps reduce the influence of cold, damp ground on the crawl space. Ground insulation can be particularly useful when there is too little working space to insulate the underside of the floor properly.
Whether ground insulation suits your home depends on access, moisture levels and the floor structure. That is why we inspect the crawl space first. You receive advice on a suitable approach, without a one-size-fits-all promise in advance.

What we offer
EPS beads for crawl space ground insulation
A good solution starts with the conditions beneath your home. We assess not only the insulation material, but also the source of moisture, ventilation and accessibility.
- 1
Why EPS beads?
EPS stands for expanded polystyrene. The lightweight beads together form an insulating layer on the ground in the crawl space.
Lightweight and moisture-resistant
EPS absorbs little water. This makes it usable in damp crawl spaces, provided the existing conditions and chosen installation are suitable.
Installation through a hose
The beads are blown in through a suitable access point and distributed across the ground. The required layer thickness depends on the product and the desired thermal resistance.
- 2
Ground insulation or floor insulation?
The position of the material makes the difference. With ground insulation, EPS beads sit on the ground; with floor insulation, the material is installed directly against the floor.
Insulating the floor directly
If there is enough working height in the crawl space, floor insulation may be the most targeted way to reduce heat loss through the floor. Ground insulation is not automatically an equivalent alternative.
Assessing a low crawl space
Ground insulation may offer a solution when space beneath the floor is limited. Access, pipes and ventilation must still allow a careful installation.
- 3
Moisture and ventilation in the crawl space
A layer of beads does not replace an investigation into moisture problems. The cause determines which measures are needed.
Checking the moisture source first
Ground moisture, leaks and groundwater each require a different assessment. Ground insulation does not repair leaking pipes and is not waterproofing.
Maintaining ventilation
Ventilation openings must remain functional. We also account for pipes and access for future maintenance.
- 4
Subsidies for crawl space ground insulation
Ground insulation may qualify for an ISDE subsidy. The installation must meet the current requirements, including thermal resistance, area and professional installation.
Checks before installation
Check the current RVO conditions and discuss which product details and supporting documents are required. A quotation does not guarantee a subsidy award.
Do not count floor and ground insulation twice
ISDE has rules for combining floor and ground insulation. Do not assume you can receive two separate subsidies for the same area; check which measure counts towards your application.
Benefits of bodemisolatie through Greenisolatie
Starting with the ground
The insulating layer reduces the influence of cold ground on the crawl space climate.
A moisture-aware approach
We assess ground moisture and ventilation alongside the insulation measure.
An option with limited working height
Ground insulation may be an option when insulating directly against the floor is not practical.
Lightweight insulation material
EPS beads are lightweight and can be installed on the crawl space ground through a suitable access point.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between ground insulation and floor insulation?
Ground insulation sits on the ground in the crawl space. Floor insulation is installed directly against the underside of the floor and reduces heat loss there. The appropriate approach depends on the available working height, floor structure and moisture in the crawl space.
Which material does Greenisolatie use for ground insulation?
We use EPS beads for ground insulation. EPS is expanded polystyrene: a lightweight insulation material that absorbs little water. The beads are distributed as a layer across the crawl space ground.
Is ground insulation suitable for a low crawl space?
A low crawl space may be a reason to consider ground insulation. Suitable access and enough space for the required layer are still necessary. During an inspection, we assess whether installation is technically possible.
Do EPS beads help with moisture in the crawl space?
The layer can help reduce the influence of damp ground, but it does not resolve every moisture source. Leaks or flooding require a separate assessment. Good ventilation remains important after the beads are installed.
How thick should the EPS bead layer be?
This depends on the chosen product, desired thermal resistance and available space. We determine the required layer thickness for your home during the advice process. An arbitrary standard thickness is not suitable for every crawl space.
Can I get a subsidy for ground insulation?
This may be possible through ISDE if your home and the installation meet the current conditions. Check the product information, area, thermal resistance and required supporting documents. Additional rules apply when combining it with floor insulation; a subsidy award is never automatic.
How much does EPS bead ground insulation cost?
The installation depends on the area, access, required layer and crawl space conditions. Request a free quotation for a proposal tailored to your home.
Does my floor need to be opened for ground insulation?
If the crawl space has a suitable access point, the beads are installed through a hose. The entire floor does not then need to be opened. We check beforehand whether the existing access is usable or another access point is needed.
